Women's Hockey Upended by Utica

11/17/2018 5:05:00 PM

Box Score ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team suffered its second setback in as many days on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 result to United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Utica College.

Jill Crane scored the only goal of the game for the Knights, who received 41 saves from net-minder Helen Cooney in goal.

Much like last night's contest between the two teams, Saturday's tilt was tightly contested from start to finish. The Knights looked to take a different approach to Friday's contest though, scoring first on the day at the 10:16 mark of the opening period to take their first lead of the weekend series. Jill Crane found the back of the net on a power-play off a feed from Mollie Johnson to put Neumann on the front foot early. Unfortunately for the hosts, Utica would answer back right away though. The Pioneers scored just 1:29 later to level the contest at 1-1. The game would head to intermission at the same score with Utica carrying a 14-7 edge in shots.

The visitors continued their momentum into the second stanza, but despite a heavy shot advantage, they could not solve Cooney. The Pioneers fired 19 second period shots towards the junior goalie, but she stopped them all to keep the Knights in the game. Neumann's four shots in the frame were also all saved, and the game moved to the third still even at one apiece.

Following the same script as Friday's game, Neumann had its chances to work its way back into the lead. After killing off an early Utica power-play to open the period, the Knights earned themselves a power-play, but could not cash-in. The Pioneers not only stymied the hosts' man-advantage, but tallied shorthanded to go up 2-1 with 13:55 left in the game. Utica then tacked on an insurance marker just 1:25 later to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Neumann fired seven shots at the Pioneer goal in the frame looking to get back into the contest, but the Utica net-minder had an answer for each attempt. The Knights pulled Cooney for the final two minutes, but the extra attacker would not help the cause as the Pioneers took home the 3-1 win to remain undefeated on the season.

Neumann (1-6, 0-4 UCHC) will have a two week break before returning to action on Friday, November 30th at William Smith College. Puck-drop for the UCHC contest is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
