Knights Hold Off Highlanders

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team edged Cairn University 79-77 on Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest.
 
Raquan Brown-Johnson led the Knights with 24 points. Mark Perry tallied 14 points. Aaron Johnson-Chavis netted 12 and Waheem Lowman added 10.
 
The teams featured nine tied scores throughout the 40 minutes. Midway through the first half, the Knights built a nine point lead, 22-13. The Highlanders came back and tied the game at 26 with six minutes left in the first half. A layup by Perry in the final minute of the first 20 minutes gave Neumann a 40-36 lead at the break.
 
The Knights scored the first six points of the second half for an early 10 point advantage, 46-36. The Highlanders answered by netting the next 11 points for a 47-46 lead. A three-pointer by Brown-Johnson Neumann back in the lead, however Cairn continued and scored seven consecutive points for a 54-49 lead with 13:40 left on the clock.
 
The Highlanders led until five minutes left in regulation when Brown-Johnson hit two free throws for a 66-65 Knights lead. The ninth tie of the game came with 4:58 remaining and the teams knotted at 67 on a free throw by Lowman. His second free throw put Neumann in the lead, 68-67, this time for good.
 
Cairn did not go quietly and put pressure on over the final minutes. Two free throws by Brown-Johnson put the Knights up by five with five seconds left. The Highlanders hit a three-pointer before the buzzer, but the free throws sealed the win.
 
Neumann (5-3) will open Atlantic East Conference action on Saturday when it will host Marymount University. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 PM, following the women's game.
