GENEVA, N.Y. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team suffered its second setback in as many days at William Smith College on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 6-1 in United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.
Jackie Schneider scored in the loss for the Knights, while
Helen Cooney played her second straight outstanding game in goal, making 50 saves.
Saturday's contest began just like Friday's game, with Cooney keeping Neumann in the game with a stellar 20 minutes between the pipes. The junior net-minder made 15 first period saves to keep the Herons off the scoreboard in the opening period for the second straight day. Unlike last night though, Neumann was finally able to find the back of the net. Schneider fired home her fifth goal of the season off assists from
Angeline Taiariol and
Claudia Trionfo to give the Knights their first lead of the weekend. The game headed to intermission at the same score with William Smith holding a 15-8 edge in shots.
Unfortunately for Neumann, the one goal lead would not last. Despite 18 saves from Cooney in the period, William Smith tallied three unanswered goals in the stanza to take a 3-1 lead into the third.
The Knights tried to claw their way back into the contest in the final frame, but the undefeated Herons were too much for the visitors. William Smith tacked on three more markers in third period to skate away with the comfortable 6-1 win.
Neumann (1-8-0, 0-6-0 UCHC) will return to home ice next Friday, December 7
th for a UCHC matchup versus Lebanon Valley College. Puck-drop is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
