WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) 88-75 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Jamie Roberts – Fairfield Inn Tournament at Catholic University.
Nafisa Saunders led three Knights in double-digits with 32 points.
Lauren Leicht netted 21 points, including five three-pointers.
Chelsea Keebler added 12 points with four baskets from beyond the arc.
Jaylin Ortiz grabbed 10 rebounds.
The first 10 minutes had five tied scores. The Bears took a slim 27-26 lead into the second quarter. With seven minutes on the clock in the second quarter, the teams were knotted at 32. The Knights then went on a 9-0 run for a 41-32 score. The Bears ended the half on a 7-3 run and Neumann took a 44-39 lead into the break.
Neumann scored the first five points of the third quarter and would hold a double-digits lead for most of the quarter. The Knights held a 69-58 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Neumann continued to build its lead throughout the fourth quarter to come away with the 88-75 win.
Neumann (7-4) will play in the Championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM against host Catholic University. The Cardinals defeated Wesley 67-37 in the other game on Saturday.
Tournament Note: Neumann's point total (88) sets a new Catholic University hosted women's basketball tournament record. The combined total of 163 points is also a new record.
