ABINGTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team battled to a 73-65 win at Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon.
Nafisa Saunders netted 41 points in the game and grabbed 14 rebounds for the double-double. The senior went 19-for-22 from three free throw line.
Mariah Maciejewski also tallied a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards.
With the teams tied at eight, the Knights went on a 7-1 run for a 15-9 lead. The Lions scored the final six points of the quarter for a 15-15 score. Penn State Abington started the second quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 26-19 advantage. With less than a minute left before halftime, Neumann battled back and tied the game at 31. Two free throws by the Lions just before the end of the quarter gave Penn State Abington a two-point lead, 33-31, at the break.
The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter. The Knights were able to build a five-point advantage, 55-50, ending into the final 10 minutes. Midway through the fourth quarter, the teams were tied again, this time at 63. Saunders scored Neumann's final 10 points herself, while the Lions were held to just two points, and the Knights came away with the 73-65 final.
Neumann (6-3) will host Salisbury next Saturday in the final home game of the first half of the season. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM.
**Notes of Interest: Increasing her own single-game point total, Saunder's 41 points against Penn State Abington is now the second most points scored in a single game, behind Celeste Rogers (45 points against Wilmington College 2/11/1989). Saunders previously scored 37 points against Marywood last season (1/31/18). **
