Men's Ice Hockey Knocks off Lebanon Valley in UCHC First Round

HERSHEY, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team picked up a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) first round playoff win on the road at Lebanon Valley College, defeating the Flying Dutchmen by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday evening.

Paul Butler, Zac Boyle and Glenn Florczak each scored for Neumann in the victory. Matt Gibney was stellar in goal, stopping 28 shots to pick up the win.

Coming into the game as the sixth seed in the UCHC playoff tournament, the Knights set the tone early on, generating 12 first period shots compared to just seven for Lebanon Valley. It didn't take long for Neumann to break through, as Butler ripped home the game's first goal just 2:17 into play off assists from Thomas Mansbridge and Corey Kennedy to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Despite the early pressure in the hosts end, the Flying Dutchmen would answer back at the 8:49 mark to send the game to the first intermission knotted up at one apiece.

The Knights would continue apply pressure in the second stanza and would control play for much of the period. The pressure finally paid off 4:01 into the frame, as Boyle broke the deadlock off helpers from Joe Mitchell and Nick Minerva to give Neumann a 2-1 lead. Unsatisfied with just a one-goal lead, the visitors continued to press forward and were rewarded with an insurance tally from Florczak with just over eight minutes left to play in the period. Connor Annett and Clayton Boyd picked up the assists on Neumann's third goal of the game, as the Knights headed to the final period of play up by a pair.

From there, solid goaltending and team defense took over for Neumann, as the Knights smothered the Lebanon Valley attack. Needing two goals to tie, the Flying Dutchmen generated just ten shots on goal in the final frame. When the Neumann defense did break down, Gibney came up big, keeping the Flying Dutchmen off the scoreboard and sealing the 3-1 road victory for the Knights.

Neumann (10-14-2) moves on to face top seeded Utica College in the UCHC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Puck-drop is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Utica.
