SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team opened its trip to Georgia with a heartbreaking 11-10 non-conference loss to Pfeiffer College on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Chris Augustine led the Knights attack on the day, scoring twice and picking up three assists for a five-point day.
Eric Conlon,
Adam Fagan and
Bo Olshefsky also tallied twice for Neumann, who also received 13 face-off wins and seven ground-balls from
Jack Newswanger.
Brendan Risley made the start in goal, making four saves in the loss.
Â
The game did not start as planned for the Knights as Pfeiffer opened the game with four unanswered goals in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead after one.
Â
Neumann responded back to start the second stanza with a goal from Olshefsky at the 11:07 mark, but two more Falcons goals midway through the frame made it 6-1 Pfeiffer with 6:05 to play in the opening half. The Knights answered back before halftime with a marker from Fagan, but the game headed to halftime with Neumann trailing by a score of 6-2.
Â
The third quarter would be evenly played with each team netting three goals in the period. Augustine, Olshefsky and
Ryan McNichol recorded goals for Neumann in the quarter, but Pfeiffer replied with three goals of their own as the game headed to the fourth and final frame with the Falcons holding a 9-5 lead.
Â
Despite the four goal fourth quarter deficit, the Knights would not quit. Neumann came alive in the final 15 minutes and turned the game on its head. An Augustine goal 44 seconds into the quarter was answered by Pfeiffer at the 12:44 mark of the period to make it 10-6, but the Knights went on a run after that.
Â
Using two man-up goals from Conlon and
Chris Bellon, Neumann cut the lead to 10-8 with 11:18 left to play. Conlon then notched his second goal of the game two minutes later to make the deficit just one goal, before Fagan ripped home a game-tying tally with just 4:33 left to play. The four-goal rally made it 10-10 and set up a wild finish in the final minutes.
Â
Unfortunately for the Knights, Pfeiffer would have the last laugh on the day. After Conlon ripped a ball off the post with just over two minutes to go, the Falcons went down the other end of the field and scored with 1:07 left on the clock to take an 11-10 lead. Newswanger won Neumann possession off the ensuing face-off, but the Knights could not find the back of the net in the final minute of play and the game ended 11-10.
Â
Neumann (1-1) returns to the field tomorrow for its second game of the weekend in Savannah. The team will take on Virginia Wesleyan College at 11:00 AM.
