Neumann Battles in Season Opener

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Neumann University softball team opened its 2018 season in Florida for its annual spring break trip. The Knights battled in both games, but came away 0-2 to start.
 
In the first game against Hanover, Neumann fell 10-5. Kate Korte' started the season on fire, going 3-for-3 with three doubles, a walk and four RBI. Jen Sieminski started the game and went 5.0 innings. Julia Casson made her Neumann debut in the circle and went 2.0 innings.
 
The Panthers jumped on the board early, scoring three runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth. The Knights plated a run in the second. Taylor Sirolli led off with a double and scored on a passed ball. Kristina Del Gaiso scored in the fourth inning on one of Korte's doubles.
 
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, and down by a 10-2 score, Korte' hit a bases clearing double on a 3-2 count and forced the game to continue to the sixth and seventh innings.
 
Against Adrian, Neumann fell 8-4. Taylor Naman pitched the distance in the circle. Julia Cox and Korte' each had two hits in the game.
 
The Bulldogs put three runs on the board in the first inning on a three-run homerun. In the top of the third, the Knights took advantage of an error and scored four unearned runs. Cox knocked in two runs. Adrian answered with four of its own runs in the bottom of the third to take back the lead. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the fifth inning.
 
Neumann (0-2) will continue play in Florida tomorrow with a pair of games. The Knights will face Johnson & Wales at 9:00 AM followed by Point Park University at 4:30 PM.
