ASTON, Pa. – After playing its last four games on the road, the Neumann University men's lacrosse team returned home on Wednesday evening, falling by a score of 14-5 to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) rival Gwynedd Mercy University.
Neumann received single tallies from five players, including
Ryan Martin,
Chris Bellon,
Adam Fagan,
Chris Augustine and
Eric Conlon.
Brendan Risley and
Antonio Gibson split time in goal, combining for 12 saves in the loss.
The Knights returned home eager to get back into the win column. Neumann scored the first two goals of the game in the opening 5:29 of play to jump out to an early 2-0 lead via goals from Fagan and Bellon. The Griffins answered back at the 8:05 mark of the frame to make it 2-1, before defense took over the remainder of the quarter. Neither team could find another tally in the first frame and the game headed to the second stanza with the Knights leading 2-1.
As the game moved into the second quarter, Gwynedd Mercy began to take control. The Griffins reeled off four unanswered goals to open the period to take a 5-2 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the half. Neumann would not go quietly though, scoring twice midway through the frame on goals from Conlon and Augustine to bring the score back to 5-4. The game looked to be heading to halftime at the same score, but a late Griffin goal with just one second left on the clock gave the visitors a 6-4 lead as the game moved to the break.
Gwynedd Mercy kept its foot on the pedal to begin the second half, tacking on four more markers to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Martin tried to get the Knights back into the game late in the third quarter with a goal for Neumann, but it would not be enough. The Griffins responded with four more fourth quarter tallies to head home with the 14-5 road win.
Neumann (1-10, 0-3 CSAC) will be back in action this Saturday, April 14
th for a home CSAC matchup with Keystone College. Game-time is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
