WEST LAWN, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team's bid for the 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship came to a close on Saturday evening in a 2-1 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University.
In the game,
John Schoelkopf went 3-for-5 to reach 68 hits in the season and set the season record for hits in a season, breaking Will Flores '12 record of 66 set in 2012.
The Griffins struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Knights tied the game at one in the fourth inning.
Matt McLaughlin reached on a bloop double and then stole third base. Schoelkopf knocked in McLaughlin with a single.
The game remained knotted at one until the bottom of the seventh when Gwynedd Mercy plated an unearned run.
In the top of the ninth, the Knights had runners at second and third, but could not the tying or go-ahead run across the plate and the season came to an end.
Josh Cruz started the game and went 7.0 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out five.
Kutter Endy pitched the eighth inning and allowed one hit.
Neumann finishes its season 20-23 overall.
