Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls In Double Overtime at Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team lost in heart-breaking fashion on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 in double overtime at Penn State Harrisburg.

Sophomore Marlon Trejo tallied the Knights goal on the day, while senior goalie Shane Smith made seven saves in the loss.

Looking to bounce back from a loss Tuesday evening at Salisbury University, the Knights came out hungry to get back into the win column. Just over ten minutes into the contest, junior Brady Simon was hauled down from behind in the box to give Neumann a penalty kick. Trejo stepped up to take the spot kick and found the back of the net to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead. Solid defending from Neumann kept the one-goal lead intact at the halftime break with each team registering three shots apiece.

Neumann looked to hold onto the lead as the game moved into the second half, but the Lions had other ideas. Penn State Harrisburg scored to level the match in the 63rd minute, knotting the contest at 1-1 and setting the game up for a dramatic conclusion. Both teams had chances to win the game late, but the Knights had arguably the best opportunity to claim the victory when freshman Gavin Ford's curling shot drifted just past the post in the 87th minute. With the teams still tied at the end of regulation, the game headed to overtime.

The first extra session came and went without too much drama, but the second overtime period would be a back and forth affair with each team notching quality chances. The Knights played much of the frame in the Lions end, but with under two minutes left in the period, Penn State Harrisburg finally broke the deadlock. Using a turnover deep in the Neumann end to its advantage, the Lions found their way in behind the Knights' back-line and tucked in the winner past Smith to leave with the 2-1 double-overtime win.

Neumann (1-2-1) will have the rest of the weekend off before returning home for another non-conference game versus Ursinus College on Wednesday, September 12th. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
