PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team kept its positive momentum going on Sunday afternoon, picking up points in its second consecutive game with a 1-1 tie versus United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Chatham University.
Thomas Mansbridge scored the lone goal of the game for Neumann in regulation, while
Mike Cosentino made 33 saves in goal in the draw.
Following a similar script to Friday night's non-conference win over Anna Maria College, Neumann struck early and used the power play to their advantage. Mansbridge tallied his second goal in as many games just 4:46 into the contest off assists from
Joe Mitchell and
Matt Gerber to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead. Chatham responded with some quality chances of their own, outshooting Neumann by a count of 14-12 in the frame, but Cosentino was sharp and kept the Cougars off the board to preserve the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Chatham would not go quietly though, fighting back to tie the game early in the second stanza. The Cougars not only killed off another early power play opportunity for Neumann, but scored shorthanded at 1:53 of the frame to knot the contest up at 1-1. The Knights could not get much going in the period, registering only nine shots in the frame as they were held scoreless. After allowing the shorthanded goal though, Neumann was solid defensively, keeping Chatham off the board the remainder of the stanza as well to send the game to the third tied at one apiece.
After a sluggish middle period, the Knights threw everything they had at Chatham in the third. The visitors fired 18 shots on the Cougars cage in the final frame compared to just 10 for Chatham. Despite the territorial and shot advantage though, Neumann could not find the back of the net. Each team had great chances to win the game in regulation, but the game would head to overtime still even at 1-1.
As the game moved to overtime, Neumann continued its strong play, recording the only two shots of the extra session. Much like the third period though, the Knights could not solve the Chatham net-minder and the game would officially end in a tie.
With a point in hand, Neumann looked to pick up its third win in double overtime on the season and the visitors did just that.
Tommy Dougherty ripped home a goal midway through the 3-on-3 extra session and gave the Knights a much needed extra point in the UCHC standings.
Neumann (1-12-3, 0-6-3 UCHC) will return home for a pair of big UCHC games next weekend, starting with a matchup versus Utica College on Friday, January 18
th. Puck-drop versus the Pioneers is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
