ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team saw its four game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday evening as the team fell by a score of 3-2 at Elmira College in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.
Joe Mitchell and
Mario Tropea scored in the loss for the Knights, while
Mike Cosentino made 42 saves in net.
The opening period of play was dominated by the Soaring Eagles, as the hosts outshot Neumann by a count of 19-7. The Knights were held in the game by stellar play from Cosentino, who stopped every shot he faced to keep the game scoreless after one.
Elmira's relentless pressure finally paid off in the second stanza. The hosts broke through with two goals midway through the period, then tacked on a third goal with under three minutes in the frame to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Neumann generated two power plays in the period, but the visitors could not find the back of the net on either opportunity as the team headed to the final 20 minutes of play down by 3.
Needing a spark to get the team going, the Knights got just that with a goal from Mitchell on a 4-on-3 power play 5:52 into the third to make it 3-1. Neumann wasn't done there though, continuing to cut into the lead just 1:20 later via a goal from Tropea to bring the score to 3-2 with 12:48 left to play in the game.Â
The visitors threw everything they could at the Soaring Eagle net for the remainder of the game, but could not find the tying goal. Two late penalties killed some of the team's momentum, but the game remained the same score in its final moments. Neumann pulled its goalie in a last ditch effort to find a leveling goal, but Elmira denied the comeback win and took him the crucial UCHC win.
Neumann (3-13-3, 2-7-3 UCHC) will return home for a conference game versus Nazareth College on Monday, January 28th. Puck-drop is slated for 2:45 PM.Â
