ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell at Rosemont College 87-70 on Thursday evening in a non-conference contest.
Nafisa Saunders netted 40 points in the game and went 18-for-20 from the free throw line. The senior added 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Maia Bryson tallied 17 points.
In the first quarter, the Ravens took a 5-5 score and went on a 14-3 run to take a 19-8 lead. With 36 seconds left in the first, two free throws by Saunders brought the Knights back to within three, 21-18. Rosemont hit a three before the buzzer to take a 24-18 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Rosemont scored the first eight points of the second quarter to extend its lead to 32-18. The Ravens would built a lead to as many as 18, 38-20, midway through the quarter. Neumann would chip its way into the lead and get back to within 11, 49-38, at halftime.
The Knights continued to chip their way into the Ravens lead and got to within four, 61-57, with just over a minute left in the third quarter. Rosemont scored the final five points of the quarter for a 66-57 score heading into the final 10 minutes.
Once again, the Knights pulled to within four, 74-70, with 4:40 left in regulation. However, Neumann was kept off the scoreboard for the rest of the contest as Rosemont netted the final 13 points to come away with the 87-70 win.
Neumann (7-6) gets back into conference action this weekend as it heads to Immaculata for an Atlantic East doubleheader with the men. The women get underway at 1:00 PM.
