Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Edged by No. 5 Blue Jays

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Neumann University men's soccer team gave the No. 5 ranked team in the country all it could handle on Tuesday evening, falling by a score of 2-1 to Johns Hopkins University in non-conference action.

Marlon Trejo scored for Neumann in the loss, while Seth Walker made seven saves in goal.

The Knights showed the Blue Jays early on that they would not be intimidated in Tuesday's contest, playing an inspired first half of soccer. Neumann was organized defensively and despite giving up much of the possession to the hosts, the Knights were excellent on the counter. The visitors generated five shots in the period and brought the game to life with a quick counter in the 30th minute. Trejo won a ball at midfield and picked out a great pass in behind the Hopkins back-line to a streaking Steven Matalavage. The senior forward then used his pace to go in on a half breakaway before he was hauled down in the box for a penalty kick. Trejo had his initial spot kick attempt stopped by a diving save by the Blue Jay netminder, but banged home the rebound to give the Knights a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Down a goal to start the second frame, Hopkins threw everything they had at the Knights in the final 45 minutes of play. Walker made several key stops to keep Neumann ahead until the 55th minute, but the Jays were finally able to break through with a shot from distance to tie the contest at 1-1. The visitors received a gutsy performance from a beleaguered back-line and midfield missing several key players, but despite their heroic efforts, the team could not keep Hopkins from taking the lead. A goal from the hosts in the 67th minute gave the Jays a lead that they would never relinquish. Neumann fought hard to get the contest leveled late, but the Knights could not find an equalizer, falling by a score of 2-1.

Neumann (4-10-1) will now have four days to regroup before returning to Atlantic East Conference action against Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
