ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team battled to a 3-1 win over Cabrini University on Tuesday evening in an Atlantic East Conference match-up.
Melanie Malseed tallied 20 kills in the match.
Ariana Pena and
Jess Charlier each notched 15.
Rachel Cray handed out 54 assists. Malseed and
Bre Hickey led five Knights in double-digit digs with 16.
Hayley Glah and
Alex Koppany each added 13 and Cray had 11.
The first two sets took extra points, which the teams split for a 1-1 match. In set one and a 6-6 score,
Carlee Herrin served the Knights to a 12-6 lead. The Cavaliers chipped their way back and tied the game at 16-all. The teams then traded points until Cabrini came out ahead 27-25 for the first set win.
Set two went back and forth as each team would take a lead of a point or two before the other team answered. With the teams knotted at 26, kills by Hickey and Malseed gave Neumann the 28-26 second set win.
In set three, the Knights worked to an 18-12 lead and came away with the 25-18 third set win on a kill by Charlier to take the 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was a battle until the end. The Cavaliers took a slight 21-18 lead. Two kills by Hickey, a kill by Cray and a service aces by Koppany brought the set to a 22-22 score. After a timeout by Cabrini, a kill by Pena put Neumann in the lead 23-22. A Cavalier attack error and a kill by Hickey sealed the 25-22 fourth set win and a 3-1 match win for the Knights.
Neumann (16-10, 5-1 Atlantic East) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday in a tri-match with Stockton and DeSales. Action gets underway in Galloway, N.J. at 12:00 PM against the Bulldogs. The Knights will face the host Ospreys at 2:00 PM.
