Knights Take Win in Tight Duel with Nittany Lions

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team notched a comeback win against Penn State Abington 59-56 on Tuesday evening.

Terea Hunt led the Knights with 15 points in the low scoring game. Jaylin Ortiz added nine points and nine rebounds. Lauren Leicht tallied eight points and nine assists.

Hunt opened the scoring for the match up in the first minute, but Penn State Abington answered with seven straight points and held a 14-11 lead after the first quarter. The Nittany Lions continued to build their lead during the second quarter and took a seven-point lead, 27-20, into halftime.

Penn State Abington built its lead to as many as 11, 35-24, midway through the third quarter before Neumann started making its move. The Knights finished the half on a 13-6 run for a 41-37 score heading into the final 10 minutes.

Ortiz hit a layup three minutes into the final quarter and was fouled. The junior hit her free throw to put the Knights in the lead for the first time since the opening basket. Neither team would find the basket for almost two minutes of clock time when Ortiz went 2-for-2 from the line to put Neumann up by three.

In the final minute, the Knights had built a seven-point lead, 57-50. The Nittany Lions hit a late layup and just before the buzzer sounded, the teams traded intentional fouls. Neumann missed both while Penn State Abington made both for a three-point game with under a second on the clock. The Nittany Lions were not able to get a last second shot off and the Knights held on for the 59-56 win.

Neumann (2-1) will prepare to travel to compete in the Scotty Wood Tournament this weekend. The Knights will face host Muhlenberg College on Friday evening beginning at 6:00 PM.
