RADNOR, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball started strong, but fell to Cabrini University 75-67 in Atlantic East Conference action on Wednesday evening.
Nafisa Saunders paced the Knights with 27 points (14-for-14 from the free throw line) and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Maia Bryson tallied 19 points.
Mariah Maciejewski also tallied a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points.
Early in the contest, the Knights took a 6-4 advantage and went on a 15-2 run for a 21-6 lead. Neumann held a 23-11 score after the first quarter.
Neumann started the second quarter on a 7-0 run and a three-pointer by Bryson put the Knights up by 30-11. Cabrini netted the next 10 points and ended the half on a 14-4 run. The Knights took a 34-25 lead at the break.
The Cavaliers started to work their way into the Knights' lead and with 4:13 on the clock tied the game at 41. Cabrini outscored Neumann 13-8 to end the quarter and take a 54-49 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Neither team scored over the first two minutes of the final quarter. Midway through the quarter, the Cavaliers extended their lead to nine, 64-55. A layup by
Jaylin Ortiz with pulled the Knights to within four, 64-60, with 2:19 on the clock. Cabrini netted the next seven points to extend its lead to 11, 71-60, with 30 seconds remaining. There was a lot of action over the final 30 seconds and the Knights scored seven of the final 11 points in the game. But time was not on their side and the clock ran out as the Cavaliers held on for the 75-67 win.
Neumann (13-11, 5-6 Atlantic East) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Wesley. The Atlantic East Conference contest is slated to get underway at 12:00 PM.
