GENEVA, N.Y. - After a fantastic run to the postseason over the past several weeks, the sixth seeded Neumann University women's ice hockey team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) first round to third seeded William Smith College by a score of 6-0.
Helen Cooney was fantastic in the loss, stopping 61 shots in goal.Â
Neumann hung right with the Herons to open the game. William Smith carried a 20-7 edge in shots in the period, but solid goaltending from Cooney kept the scoreboard even until late in the stanza. The Knights failed to capitalize on a power play with under five minutes left in the frame and the Herons sprung right to the attack after killing off the penalty, scoring the game's first goal just 33 seconds later to take a 1-0 lead. Neumann looked to be heading to intermission down just one, but a late power play goal from William Smith with under a minute left in the period sent the game to intermission with the hosts leading 2-0.
The Knights looked to get back into the game with an early second period power play, but despite registering the period's first six shots, the team came up empty. Neumann could not sustain the early pressure though, as William Smith would outshoot the visitors by a count of 31-12 in the period. Cooney was outstanding in the frame making 30 saves, but the Herons were able to put one puck past her as the game headed to the third 3-0 in favor of the hosts.
Needing a big third period to get back into things, the Knights came up short. William Smith found the back of the net three more times in the final frame to skate away with a 6-0 victory and move on to the UCHC semifinals.
Neumann finishes its season with a record of 8-17-1. The team will miss its four graduating seniors
Jordyn Cholish,
Steph Grundy,
Jackie Schneider and
Angeline Taiariol but will look to rebuild next year as it looks to go further into the UCHC playoffs.Â
