CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team won its second consecutive game to open the season on Saturday evening in North Carolina, picking up a 14-6 win over Pfeiffer University in non-conference action.
Eric Conlon led the Knights on the evening with four goals, while
Drew Conlon,
Rich Marshall,
Chris Bellon and
Chris Augustine all tallied twice.
Jack Newswanger continued his domination in the face-off circle (15-of-19 FO's and 14 GB's) and
Brendan Risley made an outstanding 21 saves in goal.
Much like last weekend's win over Alvernia, the Knights dominated the opening quarter of play. Neumann scored the only three goals in the quarter via markers from Bellon,
Eric Conlon and Augustine to take a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes played.
The Falcons fought back for two early second quarter goals, but a four-goal rally from the Knights to end the quarter gave Neumann a comfortable halftime lead at 7-2. The visitors showed excellent scoring depth in the frame, as four different Knights scored in the period, including Marshall,
Kyle Daly,
Ryan McNichol and
Drew Conlon.
Pfeiffer made it a game early in the third quarter, scoring the first four goals of the frame to make it 7-6 at the 8:24 mark of the quarter. Fortunately for Neumann though, that was as close as the game would get. The Knights recorded three tallies late in the third quarter, then four more in the fourth frame to close out the 14-6 win. Solid team defense and some timely saves from Risley helped seal things for the visitors, as the team held Pfeiffer off the scoreboard for the final 23:24 of the contest.
Neumann (2-0) will continue its southern trip on Monday, February 25th when the team heads to Greensboro College for another non-conference matchup. Game-time in North Carolina is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
