PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team wrapped up non-conference action with a 72-68 over at the University of Valley Forge on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Nafisa Saunders set the program record for points in the win.
Saunders netted 35 points in the win. A layup with 3:54 left in the fourth quarter gave the senior her 1,835 and 1,836 career points, breaking
Brittany Whetts's (2006-10) previous record of 1,835. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Mariah Maciejewski scored 13 points and notched nine rebounds in the win. The senior assisted on Saunders record-breaking basket.
With the teams tied at six midway through the first quarter, the Knights ended the quarter on an 11-2 run for a 17-8 lead at the first break. Neumann built its lead to as many as 17 in the second quarter and took a 36-23 lead into halftime.
The Knights continued to add to their lead throughout the third quarter, leading by as many as 20 and held a 53-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Neumann continued to hold Valley Forge at arm's length for most of the final quarter. Saunders hit her record-setting basket for a 64-53 lead. However, the Patriots were not going quietly and over the next three minutes, they went on a 10-2 run to pull with three, 66-63, with just under a minute left in regulation.
Saunders answered with a layup and was fouled. She completed the three-point play to increase the lead back to six with 24 seconds remaining. Valley Forge hit a layup with 18 ticks and fouled Saunders with 10 seconds remaining. Saunders went 2-for-2 from the line for a two-possession game again. The Patriots made the last basket of the game, but time ran out and the Knights held on for the 72-68 win.
Neumann (13-10) heads into the final week of the regular season and will travel to Cabrini on Wednesday evening. Action gets underway at 6:00 PM.
