Baseball Opens Atlantic East Action with Split

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team opened Atlantic East Conference action with a split against Marymount University on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. The Saints won the first game 1-0 while the Knights took game two 8-5.

In game one, the Saints lead-off hitter reached on a single, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. He then scored on an RBI ground out for what ended up being the only run of the game.

There were just five hits between the two teams. The two for Neumann coming from John Schoelkopf. Josh Cruz took the tough loss, going the full 7.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out six.

Game two was a difference story as the teams combined for 24 hits and 13 runs. After two scoreless innings, the Saints struck first for a pair of runs in the top of the third. The Knights tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on RBI hits by Curt Yenchik and Joe Nepi.

Each team plated a run in the fifth inning to remain tied. The Knights took advantage of a Saints error and scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning. Marymount answered with two runs in the top of the seventh and the teams were tied once again.

Schoelkopf hit a two-run single in the seventh inning as the Knights scored three runs to take an 8-5 lead. Neumann worked out of some jams in the eighth and ninth innings and came away with the 8-5 game two win.
