NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team dropped a close non-conference contest on the road at Westminster College by a score of 10-8 on Saturday afternoon.
Drew Conlon (2 g, 2 a) and
Colin Blake (2 g, 1 a) each tallied twice for the Knights, while
Max Nice and
Chris Augustine each recorded a goal and an assist.
Brendan Risley made eight saves in the loss and
Jack Newswanger continued his stellar work on draws, winning 15 of 19 face-offs on the day to go along with 12 ground balls.
Neumann started slow on the afternoon, conceding the game's first three goals to trail 3-0 eight minutes into the contest. The Knights would stem the tide midway through the frame though, as they used a 4-0 run of their own to gain their first lead of game. Goals from Blake, Conlon,
Brett McLaughlin and
Ryan McNichol pushed the visitors to a one goal advantage late in the quarter, but a late tally from Westminster leveled the matchup at four apiece heading to the second stanza.
The game of streaks continued into the second, as the Titans again nudged their way in front with another three goal burst to open the period, taking a 7-4 lead with eight minutes left in the half. Just like before though, Neumann fought valiantly to get back into the game, using a late run of their own to knot the contest up before halftime. Augustine and Nice each scored in the final minutes of the frame before Blake tied the game up as the horn sounded for the half. The two teams would head to the break even at 7-7.
Defense reigned supreme in the third quarter as the team struggled to find the back of the net. Neumann tallied just 35 seconds after the restart of play via Conlon, but Westminster responded 10 seconds later to bring the score back to 8-8. That would be all the action for the quarter though, as both teams' defenses and goaltenders shined to keep the score-line knotted at eights moving into the final frame.
The Knights pressed for a winning goal in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't to be on the day. A tough Titan defense continued to stymie the Neumann attack, holding the visitors off the scoreboard in the final 15 minutes of play. Westminster was able to do just enough in the fourth quarter to come away with the win. The hosts scored twice in the period to take home the tightly contested 10-8 victory.
Neumann (2-3) will have a four day break before it travels to Goucher College for another non-conference matchup on Wednesday, March 13th. Game-time in Baltimore is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
