ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team fell to Swarthmore College 12-5 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference contest.
The Garnet jumped on the board quickly as they scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Knights were able to get two runs back in the bottom of the first. With two outs,
John Schoelkopf tripled.
Curt Yenchik followed with a double to score Schoelkopf. Yenchik scored as
Danny Padilla put the ball in play and reached on an error.
Swarthmore scored single runs in the second, third and fifth inning. The Garnet added two more runs in the seventh for a 12-2 lead.
The Knights made some noise in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs,
Eric Jester drew a walk.
Colin Pollard singled and
John Lindeborn walked to load the bases. Schoelkopf also walked, scoring Jester. Yenchik hit a two-run single for a 12-5 game. Padilla was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, but that was as close as Neumann would get and the Garnet got the final out.
Will Hart started the game and went 1.0 inning.
David Alvarez went 3.1 innings and
Brennan Hatala pitched 3.2 innings in relief. Lindeborn struck out the side in the ninth inning.
Neumann (13-19) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Gwynedd Mercy for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
