Men's Lacrosse Heads to Cabrini for Atlantic East Semifinals

4/30/2019 3:44:00 PM

ASTON, Pa. - After knocking off fifth-seeded Marywood University this past Saturday in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference tournament, the Neumann University men's lacrosse team will head to top ranked Cabrini University for a matchup in the Atlantic East semifinals tomorrow at 7:00 PM.

The fourth-seeded Knights finished the regular season with a record of 8-6, including a 4-2 mark in conference play. The team's 4-2 record in the Atlantic East placed them in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with Gwynedd Mercy and Marywood, but due to tiebreakers the Knights received the fourth-seed. Cabrini enters the contest ranked 6th in the country, posting a 15-2 overall record to go along with an unblemished 6-0 mark in conference play.

Neumann will hope for a better result than the last time the two teams met, when the Cavaliers were victorious by a score of 20-5. The Knights hung tough throughout the first half, trailing by only four goals at halftime at 6-2, but an 8-1 Cabrini run in the third quarter blew the game wide open.

The Knights will hope to build on the momentum of three consecutive wins over the past two weeks. In Saturday's opening round 10-8 win over Marywood, the team was led by Colin Blake, who tallied six points on three goals and three assists. Goalie Brendan Risley was also sharp, stopping 12 shots in the win.

The Knights have been led all season by a balanced attack led by Blake along with Drew and Eric Conlon. Blake leads the team with 53 points (33 g, 20 a), followed by Drew Conlon with 50 points on the year (27 g, 23 a). Eric Conlon tops the team in goals with 37 on the season.

Brett McLaughlin and Jack Newswanger have also been key contributors for Neumann this year. McLaughlin has been fantastic all over the field as a freshman, causing a team high 35 turnovers to go along with 53 ground balls. The defender has also chipped in with 12 goals and 11 assists on the year. Newswanger has dominated draws for the Knights all season. The sophomore face-off specialist has won 258-of-330 draws that he has taken for a 78% winning percentage, while also picking up a ridiculous 197 ground balls on the season.

Risley has been fantastic in goal for the Knights in their late season push. The junior netminder has a record of 8-5 this year with 148 saves and a 9.95 goals against average. In Neumann's current three game winning streak, he has averaged a 5.33 goals against average while making 35 saves.

Neumann is appearing in the conference semifinals for the first time since 2014. The winner of Wednesday's contest will take on either Marymount or Gwynedd Mercy in the Atlantic East Conference championship this Saturday, May 4th.
