POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team earned its first win of the second semester on Friday evening, taking down host SUNY Potsdam by a score of 5-3 in non-conference action.
Â
Dan Cangelosi (2 g),
Evan Hoey (2 a) and
Mario Tropea (1 g, 1 a) paced the Neumann attack on the evening, while goaltender Kyle Pantelone was outstanding in net with 50 saves.
Â
Things did not open as planned for the Knights in Friday's road contest as Potsdam blitzed the visitors with two goals in the opening five minutes of play to take an early 2-0 lead. The Bear advantage could have been even bigger, but 20 saves from Pantelone kept the Knights in the game. Neumann would not be discouraged though, finding the same fighting spirit it displayed last weekend to work its way back into things. After a Potsdam penalty gave the Knights their first power-play of the night, Cangelosi made the Bears pay by depositing home a goal at 16:11 to get the visitors on the board. Neumann didn't wait long to tie the score after that, as Tropea buried a shot past the Potsdam goaltender to level the contest at 2-2 just 1:21 later.
Â
Neumann's penalty killers were the stars of the second stanza as the Knights successfully killed off all three Potsdam power-plays in the period. The Knights also registered the only goal of the middle 20 minutes on a man-advantage of their own, as Cangelosi notched his second tally of the night at the 11:24 mark to give the visitors a 3-2 lead heading to the third.
Â
Potsdam would not go away in the final frame though, throwing everything it had at Pantelone in the final 20 minutes. The Neumann net-minder saved 19 more shots in the period, but could not stop the Bears from tying the matchup at 3-3 with just 7:40 left to play. Undeterred by the late goal, the Knights responded back almost immediately.
Barry Kneedler found the back of the net for the third consecutive game just 23 seconds after Potsdam evened the contest to put Neumann back up by a score of 4-3. The visitors then sealed the contest late as
Glenn Florczak scored off a feed from
Zac Boyle with 2:11 left to clinch the 5-3 road victory.
Â
Neumann (4-9-0) gets right back to the ice for a rematch versus the Bears tomorrow night in Potsdam at 6:00 PM.
