Women's Hockey Picks Up Second Win of the Weekend Over Wilkes

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team earned its second win in as many days in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action on Saturday afternoon, skating to a 4-0 win over visiting Wilkes University.

Katelyn Brown played a part in each Neumann goal on the day, recording two goals and two assists. Helen Cooney picked up the shutout in goal with 26 saves, while Emma Paton and Mikaylee Henhawk also scored for the Knights.

Neumann asserted its dominance early in the first frame, drawing a penalty just over a minute into the contest, then capitalizing on the ensuing power-play to take a 1-0 lead at the 1:39 mark. A Brown point shot rattled off the back boards and found its way to Paton, who fired home into a gaping net to put the hosts ahead.

The remainder of the period would be fairly quiet before coming to life again in the final four minutes of the frame. Neumann would tally twice in the waning minutes with Brown again taking center stage. The second Knight goal at 16:47 saw the junior forward stick-handle past two Colonel defenders before sniping a puck into the back of the net, while the third goal at 19:04 saw Brown switch to the role of playmaker, setting up a Henhawk goal with a slick drop pass that gave Neumann a 3-0 lead heading to the second.

The Knights continued to control play into the second stanza. Brown capped her stellar afternoon off with her fourth point of the game and her 17th goal of the season to give the hosts a 4-0 lead that they would not relinquish. Cooney took over from there, denying every Wilkes effort the rest of the period to help Neumann retain its four-goal lead into the third.

The Colonels tried their best to get back into the game in the final frame with 10 third period shots, but Cooney was there to shut the door each and every time. The senior net-minder was forced into some tough late saves, but she held on for her fourth shutout of the season to help the Knights to a big conference win.

Neumann (9-7-0, 6-1-0 UCHC) will hit the road next weekend for a pair of conference games at Utica College and Nazareth College. Puck-drop on Friday at Utica is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
