HERSHEY, Pa. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team's trip to the "sweetest place on Earth" turned sour late in the third period, as the Knights fell to host Lebanon Valley College by a score of 6-1 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play at the Hershey Park Arena.
Â
Danny Cangelosi was the lone goal scorer for the Knights on the evening, while Kyle Pantelone made 19 saves in goal in the loss.
Â
The first frame would be a quiet one for both teams. Using two early power plays, Neumann generated 12 shots in the opening period, but could not put a puck past the Dutchmen goaltender. Lebanon Valley recorded just four shots in the frame, as the scoreline remained 0-0 heading to intermission.
Â
The hosts finally broke the scoreless deadlock early in the second stanza. After killing off the third Neumann power play of the game, the Dutchmen used the momentum gained from the successful penalty kill to score at 4:20 to take a 1-0 lead. The Knights bounced back with a strong response after the goal, outshooting Lebanon Valley by a count of 15-9 in the period. Despite the shot advantage though, Neumann still could not light the lamp as the game stayed 1-0 in favor of the hosts heading to the third.
Â
The game remained 1-0 for the first half of the final frame, but things would get wild in the second half of the stanza. The Knights fought back with an equalizer with 7:34 left to go in the game, but the Dutchmen responded almost immediately. With the game tied at 1-1, Lebanon Valley unleashed a three-goal barrage in a span of just 1:57 of game time to take a commanding 4-1 lead with 4:52 left in the contest. Neumann tried to answer back late in the frame, but as the visitors sent numbers forward looking to get back into the game, the Dutchmen made them pay with a pair of goals on the counter rush to seal the 6-1 conference win.
Â
Neumann (6-13-0, 5-7-0 UCHC) will look to bounce back with a win on home ice tomorrow as the team takes on Elmira College. Puck-drop for the conference contest is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
