Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey Clipped in Overtime by Mustangs

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team dropped its second game in as many days to host Morrisville State College in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday afternoon, falling in overtime by a score of 3-2 in non-conference action.

Katelyn Brown provided all the offense on the day, scoring both goals in the loss. Michelle Winand-Bacon was excellent in her first-ever start in goal, stopping 37 shots on the afternoon.

Morrisville began where they left off in yesterday's game, taking the play to the Knights from the opening whistle. The Mustangs outshot the visitors 13-3 in the opening period, earning the game's first goal at the 3:59 mark to take an early 1-0 lead. Despite being heavily outshot, Neumann would stay in the game with an excellent individual effort from Brown. The junior forward notched her 13th goal of the season with 5:28 left in the first frame to level the contest at 1-1 as the game headed to intermission.

After Neumann took a late first period power play, Morrisville took full advantage of the early second stanza man-advantage. The hosts found the back of the net just 34 seconds into the frame to take a 2-1 lead that they would carry all the way into the third. Shots in the second finished 12-4 in favor of the Mustangs.

Needing a goal to tie the contest up at two apiece, the Knights threw everything they had at the Mustangs in the final 20 minutes of play. A Morrisville penalty midway through the period set the stage for a comeback bid, as Brown tallied her second goal of the game on the ensuing power play to knot the game up 2-2 with just over 10 minutes left in the game. A late Neumann penalty gave the Mustangs a chance to win the matchup in regulation, but excellent penalty killing and superb goaltending from Winand-Bacon kept the game tied after 60 minutes.

The Knights resolve was finally broken by the Mustangs early in the overtime period. Despite terrific effort from the visitors all game long, Morrisville scored on its first shot of the extra session to seal the 3-2 non-conference victory.

Neumann (7-5-0) will have a week off before returning home for another non-conference two-game series with SUNY Cortland. Puck-drop for Friday's first game of the series is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
