SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team pulled away with a 67-61 Atlantic East Conference win over Marywood University in the regular season finale Wednesday evening.
Jaylin Ortiz tallied a double-double for the Knights with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Lauren Leicht and
Terea Hunt each netter 13 points while
Kiara Stovall added 11 points. Hunt also tallied eight rebounds.
The first quarter of the matchup was slow as both teams couldn't get on the board for the first two minutes. As the quarter continued, both teams battled to keep it a close game, but the Knights pulled away to end the quarter with a 17-10 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, Neumann opened its lead to 10, 24-14. Marywood answered by scoring nine straight to pull within one, 24-23, with two minutes before halftime. The Knights took a 28-24 edge into the break.
Halfway through the third quarter, the teams were knotted at 31. A three-pointer by Ortiz started a 14-3 run for a 45-34 advantage. The Knights held a 48-40 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Pacers started the fourth quarter with a 10-3 run to pull within one, 51-50. With two minutes remaining in the contest, the teams were tied at 61. A free throw by Leicht gave the Knights the lead back with 1:39 on the clock.
Kortni Taylor hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to extend Neumann's lead to four. Two free throws down the stretch sealed the win for Neumann.
Neumann (7-18, 3-9 Atlantic East) will prepare for Atlantic East Conference postseason. The Knights will be the sixth season and will travel for a first round game on Monday against an opponent to be determined.
