DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team suffered its first setback of the 2020 season on Wednesday night, dropping a 12-8 result on the road at Delaware Valley University in non-conference action.
Colin Blake and
Drew Conlon carried the Knights offense on the evening, each picking up five points on four goals and an assist.
Jack Newswanger picked up a team leading eight ground balls, while
Brendan Risley made seven saves in goal in the loss.
Conlon jump-started the Knights in the first frame with two quick goals to get the visitors out to an early 2-0 lead. The rest of the quarter would be relatively quiet, but Delaware Valley answered back with a goal with 3:43 left in the period to make it 2-1 Neumann after one.
Things would unravel quickly in the second stanza for the Knights though. The Aggies blitzed the visitors for four unanswered tallies in the opening eight minutes of the frame to take a 5-2 lead midway through the quarter. A goal from Blake stemmed the tide momentarily to make it 5-3 with 4:17 left in the half, but another four-goal Aggie rally late in the period capped off by a man-down goal with just 12 seconds left made it 9-3 in favor of the hosts at halftime.
Trailing for the first time in a game this season, Neumann showed a ton of resolve after the half to fight back into things. Using a 4-0 run of their own in the third quarter, the Knights got right back into the contest, bringing the score back to 9-7 as the game moved to the final frame. Blake and Conlon each scored twice in period to bring the visitors back from the dead.
Unfortunately for Neumann, it could not keep its momentum rolling into the fourth. Three early goals from Delaware Valley made it 12-7 in favor of the hosts with just 6:55 left in the game. Blake got a consolation marker with 27 seconds left in the contest, but it was too little, too late as the Knights dropped their first game of the season by a score of 12-8.
Neumann (3-1) will look to bounce back next Wednesday, March 4th when it caps off it's four game road trip at Manhattanville College. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
