Women's Ice Hockey Hosts Stevenson in UCHC First Round Playoff Action

2/29/2020 9:28:00 AM

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team hosts a postseason game for the first time since 2011 on Saturday afternoon, taking on Stevenson University in the first round of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) playoffs at IceWorks.

Neumann earned the second seed on the UCHC South side of the bracket, finishing the conference regular season with a record of 9-6-1 (12-12-1 overall). The Knights finished the season tied with third-seeded Stevenson (8-5-3) with 19 points, but won out on a tiebreaker between the two teams after going 1-0-1 versus the Mustangs this year. Neumann picked up a 4-1 victory over Stevenson at home in November and more recently tied the Mustangs 3-3 in Maryland on February 8th.

The Knights have been led all season by the offensive firepower of Katelyn Brown. The junior forward has recorded 22 goals and 16 assists for 38 points on the season, good for a tie for third on the UCHC points list. Neumann has also received excellent seasons from another pair of juniors in Claudia Trionfo and Jeannie Padden. Trionfo has picked up 24 points on nine goals and 15 assists, while Padden has registered 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists.

Defensively, the team has been backstopped by stellar play from senior goaltender Helen Cooney all season long. The senior net-minder has earned a record of 12-10-1 on the season with a 2.69 goals against average and a 0.924 save percentage. Her four shutouts this season moved her into first place all-time in program history in the category with 10, while the next save she makes will also put her first all-time in saves at 2366.

Neumann will look to win it's first playoff game since 2011 when they knocked off Oswego State in the old ECAC West Conference. A win would also be the team's first in its brief time in the UCHC.

Puck-drop is scheduled for Saturday, February 29th at noon.
