OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In a battle for second place in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) South Division, the Neumann University women's ice hockey team picked up a huge road point in a 3-3 tie with Stevenson University.
Â
Katelyn Brown,
Sid Squires and
Georgia Wunder scored in the draw for Neumann, while
Helen Cooney made 42 big saves in goal.
Â
The first frame would be all Stevenson, as the Mustangs dominated with a 17-3 edge in shots. Cooney was superb in the period though, keeping the Knights in the game with 16 saves. Just one puck got past the senior stalwart in the opening 20 minutes, as the hosts scored with just 27 seconds left to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Â
The second stanza would be a see-saw battle between the two teams. The Knights fought back with an equalizer 5:43 into the frame as Wunder tickled the twine on a power play to make it 1-1. The stalemate wouldn't last long, as the Mustangs replied with a goal three and a half minutes later to make it 2-1 in favor of the hosts. Despite the deficit, Neumann wouldn't quit. The visitors struck back just two minutes later, as Squires found the back of the net at the 11:47 mark to level the contest again at 2-2. The game looked to be heading to the third tied, but a late power play goal from Stevenson sent the game to intermission with the Mustangs holding a 3-2 lead.
Â
With home ice playoff implications on the line, the Knights played an inspired third period to work themselves back into the game. It took until late in the final frame, but Neumann finally found an equalizer with just 2:39 left to go in the game. The visitors turned to their leading goal scorer of the season for the game-tying goal, as Brown came up clutch once again by scoring her 19th goal of the season to send the game to overtime.
Â
Needing a win to catch the Knights in the conference standings, Stevenson pressed for a winner in the extra session but was stone-walled by excellent goaltending from Cooney. The senior stopped all six shots she faced in the five bonus minutes as Neumann held on for the 3-3 tie.
Â
With each team having three games remaining, the Knights maintain a two point advantage over the Mustangs. If the two teams were to tie on points at the end of the season, Neumann would now hold the tiebreaker having beaten Stevenson at home back in November.
Â
Neumann (10-11-1, 7-5-1 UCHC) returns to the ice next Saturday, February 15th with a home matchup versus UCHC South Division leader Manhattanville College. Puck-drop for the conference tilt is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
