CLERMONT, Fla. – The Neumann University softball team won its first two games of the 2020 campaign on Sunday afternoon. The wins also mark the first wins as head coach for Coach
George White.
In the first game of the day, Neumann defeated Thiel College 8-0 in six innings. A quick start helped seal the win. The Knights batted around plus two in the top of the first as they scored six runs before even taking the field. A
Vanessa Bowen triple scored two runs in the inning.
Kristina Del Gaiso hit a two-run single up the middle.
Emily Reid doubled in the sixth run of the inning.
Bri Lagroteria singled in Del Gaiso in the third for a 7-0 Neumann lead.
Kierstin Fallers led off the top of the sixth with a double and scored on a single by
Morgan Fitzpatrick for the eventual 8-0 final.
Jennifer Sieminski went the distance in the circle as she allowed just three hits over six innings while striking out five.
In the nightcap, Neumann won the back and forth battle on a walk-off, 7-6, over Ohio Northern University.
ONU opened the scoring with a two-run homerun in the top of the fist inning. The Knights answered with back-to-back RBI singles by Fallers and Fitzpatrick. The Polar Bears took back the lead with a run in the top of the fourth. The Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. ONU tied the game at five with two runs in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Fallers walked, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. The Polar Bears tied the game in the top of the sixth. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Fallers doubled and then scored on the game-winning single by Fitzpatrick for the 7-6 win.
Nicole Wisser battled in the circle for the win. She allowed six runs on 12 hits and struck out six.
Neumann (2-0) is right back on the field tomorrow and will face Moravian (10:15 AM) and Roanoke (3:00 PM) in day two of the spring break trip.
