Softball Falls in Two Contests

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Neumann University softball team fell in a pair of contests on Thursday afternoon.

The Knights faced No. 21 Wartburg College in the first game of the afternoon and fell 8-1. Neumann then lost in a walk-off to Misericordia University 2-1 in the night cap.

Jennifer Sieminski started the game and went three innings. Janiece Robles went 4.0 innings and allowed a run on three hits.

Wartburg opened the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first. Neumann responded with its run in the bottom of the first. Grace Sperrazza led off with a single and scored on a double by Jackie Selby. Wartburg then plated four runs in the second and one in the third for a 7-1 lead en route to the 8-1 final.

Nicole Wisser went 6.2 innings against Misericordia. She allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out four.

The Cougars got on the board in the second inning with a solo homerun. In the top of the fifth, Morgan Fitzpatrick doubled to knock in Sperrazza and tie the game at one.

Each team would have its chance to add runs, but it wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that the game-winning run was scored. The Cougars had the bases loaded with no outs. The Knights were able to get a force out at home for the first out of the inning and Wisser then struck out the batter for out number two. But it wasn't meant to be, and Misericordia was able to get the walk-off with a two-out single.

Neumann (4-4) will wrap up its spring break trip tomorrow. The Knights will face RPI at 9:30 AM, followed by Olivet at 2:00 PM.
