Men's Soccer Battles to a Draw at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Neumann University men's soccer team battled to a hard fought draw at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon, tying by a score of 1-1 in Atlantic East Conference play.

Marlon Trejo scored for the Knights on the afternoon, while Seth Walker was outstanding in goal with 13 saves in the draw.

With Atlantic East playoff positioning on the line, both teams came out strong on the afternoon. Each team had their chances to open the scoring in the opening half, but despite five shots on target for both squads, neither could find the back of the net. The Knights' best opportunities in the first 45 minutes came on multiple set pieces deep in the Saints end. Two of those chances were headed off the line as the game remained tied. Marymount nearly scored as well late in the period, but an excellent diving save on a driven ball from distance by Walker kept the game 0-0 at the half.

As each team needed a win to climb the conference standings, the game opened up even more in the second stanza. Just under five minutes into the frame, the Knights finally broke through with the game's first goal thanks to a great counter attack that led to a foul in the box and an ensuing penalty kick. Trejo stepped up and smashed home his team-leading eighth goal of the season to make it 1-0 in favor of Neumann. The lead would be short-lived though, as the Saints came storming back almost immediately. Marymount used a headed effort off a free kick deep in the visitors' end to knot the contest at 1-1 just 55 seconds after the Neumann tally.

Each team had chances to take the lead late in regulation, but despite 20 combined shots in the period from the two teams, the game would head to overtime tied at one apiece. Neumann nearly won the game off a corner kick in the first extra session, but a foul call cancelled out a great scoring chance as the game remained tied. Marymount also generated a few golden opportunities late in the second extra session, but a stout Neumann defense alongside Walker helped keep the game tied as the game finished 1-1.

Neumann (5-10-1, 2-2-1 Atlantic East) will close out its regular season schedule next Wednesday, October 27th when it plays host to Marywood University. Game-time for the Atlantic East finale is scheduled for 4:00 PM in Aston.
