Women's Ice Hockey Drops Second Straight to Stevenson

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team could not celebrate its home opener with a win on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 result to visiting Stevenson University in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.

Katelyn Brown was the lone goal scorer on the day for the Knights and Michelle Winand-Bacon was outstanding in goal with  54 saves in the loss.

Seeking revenge from yesterday's 6-2 defeat at Stevenson, the Knights were eager to flip the script in Saturday's home opener. The Mustangs carried the play for much of the opening period with an 18-4 edge in shots, but despite the large shot disparity, it would be Neumann who lit the lamp first. The Knights used an odd man rush to push their way in front. Georgi Rowland found Sid Squires streaking to the net and after the senior forward's shot was initially stopped, Brown was right on the doorstep to bang home the rebound to make it 1-0. The game would head to the first intermission at the same scoreline.

The second stanza would be all Stevenson though. The Mustangs were finally rewarded for their territorial dominance, scoring twice in the frame to take their first lead of the game at 2-1. The hosts continued to find it hard to come by for scoring chances, as Stevenson again dominated the shot count at 26-5 in the period. Winand-Bacon kept Neumann alive in the matchup, making 24 saves to keep it a one goal lead moving to the third.

Stevenson continued to outshoot the Knights early in the third, but Winand-Bacon would not allow the Mustangs to gain any insurance markers as the game remained 2-1. Neumann began to play much better near the end of the contest, generating a late push that nearly resulted in an equalizing tally. Despite six third period shots however, the Knights could not find pay dirt as the game finished 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

Neumann (1-5, 1-3 UCHC) will have a week to prepare for its next contest on Friday, November 19th versus Alvernia. Puck-drop at IceWorks is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
