ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's basketball team found its way back into the win column on Tuesday afternoon, taking down visiting Wilkes University by a score of 51-40 in non-conference action at the Mirenda Center.
Terea Hunt picked a double-double on the evening with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Neumann to the win, while
Lauren Klieber also notched double figures in points with 10.
It would be a slow start for the Knights on the evening, as Wilkes jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first frame to open the contest. Neumann fought back late in the quarter though, using a Klieber three-pointer and a transition layup from Hunt to cut the lead to 16-13 with 1:46 left to play in the quarter. The Colonels got a late bucket in the final seconds and took an 18-13 lead into the second stanza.
Neither team could get much going in the second quarter, as the defenses came to play. Each team scored seven points in the frame as the five point Wilkes advantage remained at the half with the score 25-20.
The Knights used halftime to regroup and came out on fire to start the second half. The hosts would dominate the third quarter, tying the contest at 25-25 right away on a three-pointer from Hunt and a layup by
Allyson Wills. The two teams went back and forth in the middle of the period, as the score was 30-30 with 3:12 left to play in the frame. The Colonels took a brief lead at 32-30 at the 2:50 mark of the quarter, but it would be all Neumann the rest of the way. The Knights closed out the final 2:50 on an 8-0 run, using two late layups from Hunt to give the team a 38-32 lead and send the Mirenda Center crowd in a frenzy heading to the fourth.
Wilkes wouldn't go quietly, cutting the Neumann lead to four points with 5:33 left to play on a three-pointer of their own, but that was as close as the visitors would get on the Knight. Some stout team defense and clutch shooting down the stretch would lead the hosts to their second victory of the season. With the game still somewhat in the balance late in the waning minutes,
Madison Stewart was able to hit a dagger of a three-pointer to clinch the win for the Knights.
Neumann (2-2) will look to build on the positive momentum gained from tonight's win when it heads to Haverford College for another non-conference matchup on Thursday, November 18th. Game-time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
