Women’s Hockey Battles Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team fought hard on the road at Nazareth College on Friday evening, but dropped a 3-1 result at the hands on the Golden Flyers in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play.

Georgi Rowland scored for the Knights in the evening, while Michelle Winand-Bacon was outstanding in goal with 54 saves in the loss.

Needing a much better start than Thursday's contest when the Knights conceded four first period goals, Neumann performed much better in the opening 20 minutes on Friday evening. Nazareth still took an early lead at the 6:54 mark of the period, but thanks to 16 saves from Winand-Bacon in the frame that was all the Golden Flyers would get. The Knights could not break through onto the scoresheet themselves though as the game headed to the second 1-0 in favor of the hosts.

Nazareth wasted no time doubling it's lead at the start of the second stanza. The Golden Flyers scored just 2:03 into the period to take a 2-0 lead. Again though, superlative goaltending from Winand-Bacon kept the Knights in the contest. The junior net-minder stopped 21 shots in the frame as the game remained 2-0. The game looked to be heading to intermission at the same score, but Rowland had other ideas. The sophomore forward scored at the 17:25 mark off a feed from Katelyn Brown to bring the deficit back to one goal at 2-1 moving to the third.

Neumann would have its chances to equalize the matchup in the final frame with a pair of early power plays, but the Knights could muster just one shot over the four minutes of power play time as the contest stayed 2-1. Nazareth then used the momentum gained from the killed penalties to extend its lead later in the period, scoring at 15:49 to take a stranglehold off the game at 3-1. The Knights got a late power play to try to cut into the hosts' lead again, but again it went beckoning as the game finished with the two goal advantage intact for the Golden Flyers.

Neumann (1-10-1, 1-6-1 UCHC) is now finished with its first semester schedule and will look to continue to climb the UCHC standings in January. The team's next game is scheduled for Friday, January 7th at home versus Lebanon Valley College. Puck-drop is slated for 7:00 PM.
