ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team had its season come to an end on Thursday evening at Elmira University, falling by a score of 10-0 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) quarterfinals.
Alexa Lamplugh got the start in goal and made 31 saves for the Knights, while
Michelle Winand-Bacon came on in relief to make 14 saves.
Jeannie Padden led the team with three shots on goal.
The Knights headed to New York aiming to pull off an upset of the heavily favored Soaring Eagles, but Elmira made sure that would not happen on the night. The hosts jumped all over Neumann from the opening period, outscoring the visitors by a count of 3-0 in the first frame. The Soaring Eagles held an 11-4 edge in shots after one.
Neumann tried to work it's way back into the contest with a pair of second period power plays, but Elmira stymied the Knights on both attempts. To make matters worse for the visitors, the Soaring Eagles then scored shorthanded on their way to three more second stanza goals to take a comfortable 6-0 lead after two.
Elmira continued to roll into the third, capping off the contest with four goals in the first 6:11 of the period to put an exclamation point on the quarterfinal matchup. The Knights tried to end the shutout bid late in the period, but the Soaring Eagles continued to suffocate the team's offense as they kept the visitors off the scoreboard for the second consecutive game between the two teams.
Neumann finishes its season with a record of 3-6-1. The team will look to build on its playoff experience from this season in the hopes of advancing further in the UCHC playoffs next season.
