Knights Split with Mighty Macs in Conference Action

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader with Immaculata University on Friday afternoon. The Knights took the first game 8-4 while the Mighty Macs won game two 3-2 in eight innings.

Ashlynne Scardino pitched the complete game win in game one. Over 7.0 innings, she allowed four runs, just one earned, on five hits.

The Knights didn't waste anytime and scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bri Lagroteria, Kristen Pagliaro and Rachel Albertson opened with singles to load the bases. Elizabeth Shire then knocked in Lagroteria on a sacrifice fly. Morgan Fitzpatrick followed with a two-run single and a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Emily Reid singled and scored when Lagroteria was caught in a rundown. Neumann added three more in the third inning. Jess Sarni drew a bases-loaded walk. Vanessa Bowen then hit a sacrifice fly to score Shire. Kaylee Fiocca reached on a fielders choice and Fitzpatrick scored.

Neumann's eighth run came in the bottom of the fourth as Ashley Leicht walked with the bases loaded.

In the top of the fifth, the Mighty Macs loaded the bases and spoiled the shutout on an RBI fielders choice. Immaculata then took advantage of a Neumann error and scored three unearned runs for an 8-4 score.

Neither team would score again the game one and Neumann hung on for the 8-4 win.

In game two, again the Knights struck in the first inning. Lagroteria and Pagliaro hit back-to-back singles.  With one out, Shire singled to load the bases. Christina Ludovico singled to knock in Lagroteria. Fiocca followed with a bases-loaded walk to score Pagliaro and a 2-0 lead.

The Mighty Macs cut the lead in half with a homerun in the sixth. Immaculata tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh. In the top of the eighth, the Mighty Macs pushed across another run to take their first lead of the afternoon.

The Knights led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk but could not get the tying run across the plate and fell 3-2.

Janiece Robles started the game and went 7.2 innings. She allowed three runs on 10 hits. Sarni came in and got the last out of the eighth inning.
