Trejo Stunner Moves Men's Soccer Past Moravian in Overtime

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team earned a hard fought road victory on Saturday afternoon, knocking off host Moravian College in overtime by a score of 1-0 in non-conference action.

Marlon Trejo scored the game-winning goal for the Knights, while goalie Seth Walker stopped five shots to pick up the win in net.

Hoping to get back in the win column after a pair of tough home losses, the Knights played an energetic first half, taking the play to the Greyhounds for much of the opening 45 minutes. Neumann's best chance to score of the half came in the 10th minute after a mad scramble in the Moravian box. Eddie Proud got in behind the hosts' back-line but an on-rushing Greyhound keeper thwarted his effort with a diving save as the game remained scoreless. Moravian found its legs late in the half and had the better of the play in the final 10 minutes of the frame, but Walker was forced into only one save as the game headed to halftime tied at 0-0.

Much like the first half, Neumann started strongly out of the gate in the second stanza. The Knights generated a few quality chances in the opening minutes of the half, with the best being a low driven shot from Corey Madigan that was saved by the Greyhound net-minder. The game would get flipped on its head in the 59th minute as the Neumann momentum continued with the team drawing a second yellow card on a Moravian defender. With the soft red card, the Knights would play up a man for the remainder of the game.

Despite the numerical advantage though, it would be the hosts who raised their level. The Greyhounds tallied four shots on goal after receiving the red card compared to just two for the Knights. The best chance for either team in the half came in the 70th minute after a mistake from a Neumann defender led to partial breakaway for the hosts. With an oncoming Greyhound forward sprinting right at him with the ball, a sprawling Walker made himself big and dove to his left to deny the effort and absolutely save the game for the visitors. Both teams created a few half-chances late in the match, but neither could score as the game headed to overtime knotted up at zeroes.

After making a few key adjustments in between regulation and overtime, the Knights again began to dominate in the extra session. Outshooting Moravian 4-1 in the period, Neumann drew a second yellow card on yet another Greyhound defender after Jon Yinger was hauled down from behind on an excellent transition move from the Knights. The visitors would go up two men after the second soft red for Moravian, but that fact would become a moot point thanks to the sublime left foot of Trejo. After scoring on a free kick from about the same spot just over a week ago versus Penn State Abington, Trejo reached even further into his bag of tricks on Saturday. Again from about 30 yards out, the senior midfielder wired a bullet of a free-kick over a two-man wall. The ball whizzed past the Moravian defenders in the wall and beat the goalkeeper clean, striking the underside of the crossbar before finding its way into the goal to give Neumann the 1-0 sudden-death victory. The bar-down finish hushed the crowd and sent the Knights' bench into bedlam as the team celebrated the goal as a group in the corner of the field.

Neumann (3-4) will look to keep rolling next Wednesday, September 22nd when it plays host to local rival Widener University. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
