ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University men's soccer team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon, suffering a 2-0 setback to visiting Penn State Harrisburg.
Seth Walker was outstanding in goal on the day, stopping 12 shots in the loss.
The Knights would have their hands full all game long without several key players against a strong Lions team with just one loss on the season. Starting seven freshman in the game, Neumann relied on a defensive game plan that helped frustrate Harrisburg throughout the first half. The hosts gave up 16 shots in the opening frame, but all of them came from distance as Walker made seven saves. The Knights best chance came off the foot of
Sam Clavijo as a floated effort from distance in the 19th minute nearly caught the Lion goalkeeper off his line before landing just over the crossbar. Despite being heavily outshot, the young and undermanned Neumann team reached halftime with the score level at 0-0.
Harrisburg continued to dominate the game in the second stanza, throwing nine more efforts toward goal. Neumann held tough until the 60th minute, but the visitors finally broke through with the game's first goal off a finish at the penalty spot of a cross from the right flank. The Lions then doubled their lead in the 80th minute as a shot ricocheted off of both posts before crossing the line to make it 2-0. Neumann nearly got a goal back in the 87th minute, but a
Jon Yinger shot heading right into the net was headed off the line by a diving Harrisburg defender to keep the deficit at two. The game would finish soon after at the same score, with the visitors picking up their fifth straight win.
Neumann (3-7) wraps up it's tough non-conference slate this coming Saturday, October 2nd as the team heads to Salisbury University. Game-time is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
