GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell at Gwynedd Mercy University 95-80 in its Atlantic East Conference opener on Wednesday evening.
Chelsea Keebler led five Knights in double-digits with 15 points.
Tierra Harris notched a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Terea Hunt and
Aubrie Breisblatt each netted 12 points and
Dymond Collins added 11.
The Griffins came out and scored the first 11 points of the game. The Knights then netted eight of the next nine points for a 12-8 game midway through the first quarter. A three-pointer by Breisblatt put Neumann up 19-17 with two minutes on the clock. Gwynedd Mercy netted the final basket of the quarter for a 24-21 lead at the first break.
Tied at 28 early in the second quarter, the Griffins went on a 17-5 run over four minutes to take a 44-32 lead. Gwynedd Mercy held a 53-40 advantage heading into halftime.
Gwynedd Mercy held a double-figure lead throughout the third quarter and took a 76-62 lead into the final 10 minutes.
The Knights scored the first six points of the final quarter and 12 of the first 13 points to pull within three, 77-74. The Griffins answered with six straight points to extend their lead back to nine. A three-pointer by Keebler with 3:41 on the clock brought Neumann to within seven, 86-79, but that was as close as the Knights would get over the final three minutes and Gwynedd Mercy came away with the 95-80 win.
Neumann (5-8, 0-1 Atlantic East) heads to Centenary on Saturday in a rescheduled conference game against the Cyclones. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 PM.
