Last Second Free Throws Downs Women’s Basketball

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell on last minute free throws to Cabrini University, 50-48, on Monday evening in Atlantic East Conference action.

Madison Stewart led the Knights with 14 points. Tierra Harris had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dymond Collins grabbed 10 boards.

The game came down to two free throws with three seconds on the clock and the game knotted at 48. Just before that, with 20.5 seconds left, Stewart hit a layup to tie the game at 48, completing the comeback for the Knights. The Cavaliers dribbled down the court and as time was winding down ended up being fouled. Cabrini sank the two free throws. Neumann took the ball up the court but could not get another shot off.

The game started with a good layup by Harris before Cabrini scored the next eight points. After a Neumann timeout, the Knights netted the next six to tie the game at eight. The teams traded a few baskets and the Cavaliers hit two free throws in the final minute of the first quarter to take a 14-12 lead.

Cabrini built a lead as large as nine, 30-21, in the second quarter. A jumper by Stewart was the last basket of the first half for a 30-23 score at the break. The Cavaliers took their first double-digit lead at the end of the third quarter, 41-30, heading into the fourth.

Over the first half of the final quarter, the Knights had a 9-1 run, capped by a three-pointer by Chelsea Keebler, to pull within three, 42-39. The Cavaliers answered with the next five points before Collins sank a three pointer. After the teams traded free throws, Keebler hit her second three-pointer to bring Neumann to within two, 48-46, with under a minute left in regulation.

Each team called a timeout and Cabrini while was running its play, Allyson Wills forced a turnover at the top of the key. This set up the game-tying basket by Stewart. Despite what looked like the completed comeback, the Knights could not hang on and fell on the last second free throws.

Neumann (7-10, 2-3 Atlantic East) will host Salisbury for a non-conference contest Wednesday evening with tip-off slated for 7:00 PM.
