Last Minute Basket Puts Pride Over Knights

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell short 69-65 on Tuesday night against Widener University.
 
Lauren Klieber continues to lead the Knights, scoring 23 points in the game and grabbing 10 boards for another double-double. The sophomore went 11-for-11 from the line. Jacqueline Wardrop tallied 17 points. Mia Blume netted 12 and Terea Hunt added 11 off the bench.
 
The first half was a tale of two quarters. Tied at six, the Pride finished the first quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 15-8 lead.
 
The Knights came out strong in the second period and a Hunt three-pointer midway through the quarter five Neumann a 19-18 edge. Wardrop followed with a three-pointer for a 22-18 score. The Pride pulled back within one, 22-21, before the Knights finished the quarter on a 10-2 run for a 32-23 lead at the half.  

Widener chipped its was into the lead and with 5:21 left in the third tied the game at 34. Wardrop answered right back with a three, but the Pride wouldn't go away, and the teams went into the final quarter tied at 45.
 
The Knights netted the first five points of the fourth quarter. Neumann held the team for most of the quarter and was up by seven, 63-57, 1:32 left in regulation. Two free throws by Klieber with 1:01 on the clock gave the Knights a 65-59 advantage. A Pride three-pointer and layup pulled Widener to within one, 65-64 in the final minute. Neumann had a chance to extend its lead, but the Pride hit another three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining to take a 67-65 lead. The Knights could not get the game-tying basket to fall and two free throws with two seconds sealed the come-from-behind win for Widener.
 
Neumann (2-4) will host Lancaster Bible next Wednesday for non-conference action beginning at 7:00 PM.
