Neumann and Marymount Battles to Tie in Atlantic East Championship

Saints Clinch on PK’s

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic East Conference Championship. The game went to penalty kicks to decide the Champion, with the Saints winning 4-3.

Neumann scored its goal in the 12th minute on a free kick. Eddie Proud had the free kick go off the Saints wall of players and right to Jake Kuzmick, who headed the ball into the back of the net.

The Knights held the lead throughout most of the rest of regulation. After a scrum in front of the net as time was winding down, Neumann was called for a hand ball in the box and Marymount was awarded a penalty kick. In the 88th minute, the Saints tied the game at one.

Neither team could score in the extra 20 minutes and the game finished in a tie. To crown the 2022 Atlantic East Championship, the teams went to penalty kicks.

The Saints took a 1-0 advantage after the first round of kicks. Both teams converted on their second kicks. In round three, Seth Walker made the save on Marymount's kick and Proud sank his shot to tie the kicks up at two. In round four, both teams again are successful, and the teams were tied at three heading into the final round of kicks. In the fifth round, Walker got a hand on the Saint's shot, but the ball snuck into the net. On Neumann's final shot, the ball went off the cross bar and Marymount came away with the 4-3 win in PK's.

Walker finished with three saves in net. Kuzmick had half of Neumann's 10 shots in the game, and all shots on goal with three.

Neumann is currently 7-7-3 and will wait for the ECAC Announcement on Monday to see if its season will continue.
