Women’s Basketball Picks Up Wire to Wire Win

BRONX, N.Y – The Neumann University women's basketball team, in the final game of the calendar year, never trailed in a 56-36 win over Penn College Thursday afternoon in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, hosted by Lehman College.

Lauren Klieber continued her strong sophomore season, leading the Knights with 15 points and six rebounds. For her efforts this week, Klieber was named to the All-Tournament team.

Terea Hunt and Emily DuPont each added eight points. DuPont also tallied five boards and three assists. All 11 Knights that hit the floor grabbed at least one rebound while 10 netted one point in the team win.

A jumper by Hunt opened the scoring as the Knights netted the first seven points and never looked back.  Penn College pulled within four at the 3:28 mark of the quarter. The Knights ended the quarter hitting three straight three-pointers, including a Chelsea Keebler finish with five seconds left for a 20-7 score after the first 10 minutes.

After trading baskets for most of the second, the Knights lead ballooned to 22 on the strength of a 9-1 run over the last 4:20 of the half. The run was capped off by a late jumper by DuPont, giving Neumann a 39-17 lead at the break.

In a low-scoring third quarter, the Knights defense held Penn College to just one field goal and were able to outscore the Wildcats by an 11-5 margin. Hunt contributed four of her eight points and pushed the Neumann lead to 28 entering the final ten minutes. Although the Knights were outscored in the fourth quarter were still able to secure the 20-point victory and return to a .500 record.

Neumann (6-6) will return to action on Wednesday evening for its final non-conference game when it hosts Penn State Brandywine. Start time will be at 6:00 PM.
