Softball Splits Two One Run Games

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Neumann University softball team split a pair of one-run games at Washington College (Md.) on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights took the first game 6-5 in eight innings. The Shorewomen took game two 7-6 in six innings, after the game was called due to darkness.
 
Elizabeth Shire tallied three hits in game one to lead the Knights. Courtney McKenna started the game and went the first 4.2 innings. Olivia Ammon picked up the win in relief, going 3.1 innings. The freshman allowed a run on a hit and struck out three.
 
Neumann got on the board first in the top of the second as Vanessa Bowen singled in Shire. Washington tied the game at one in the bottom of the third. The Shorewomen took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the fifth.
 
The Knights strung together three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at four. Washington put a runner on in the seventh but couldn't score so the game went to the eighth.
 
Taylor Portzline singled to score Emily Reid in the top of the eighth. Portzline came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Bowen. The Shorewomen plated a run in the bottom of the eighth but the Knights held on for the 6-5 game one win.
 
Ashley Mazzeo started game two in the circle and went the first five innings in the no decision. Ashlynne Scardino pitched the sixth inning for the loss.
 
Washington took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Bowen scored Neumann's first run in the third on a single by Aubrie Breisblatt. Ashley Leicht followed with a two-run double to score Reid and Breisblatt. The Shorewomen took back the lead in the bottom of the third, 4-3.
 
In the top of the sixth, Shire and Emily DuPont led off with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at four. Kristen Pagliaro hit an RBI groundout to score DuPont. Reid singled to knock in Bowen for a 6-4 edge.
 
Washington took advantage of some Neumann miscues and scored three runs in the sixth for a 7-6 edge before the game was called due to darkness.
 
Neumann (6-15) is back on the field tomorrow as it heads to Eastern. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:00 PM.
