Fagan Leads Women's Lacrosse to Home Opening Win

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season in its home opener on Saturday afternoon, lighting up the scoreboard in a 21-17 non-conference victory over the visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Lindsey Fagan was unstoppable on the day for the Knights, scoring nine times and adding an assist for a 10-point afternoon. Brylin Adams (3 g, 4 a) and Bekah Brosky (3 g, 3 a) were also outstanding in the Neumann attack, while Catriona Corrigan picked up the win in goal with five saves.

The first frame would not start well for the Knights on the day, as Mount Saint Vincent scored five of the first six goals to take a 5-1 lead late in the quarter. Neumann got a goal back with 16 seconds left in the period via Adams, but after winning the ensuing draw the Dolphins raced down the field and tallied with just two seconds remaining to take a 6-2 lead after one period of play.

The Knights began to roll at the start of the second stanza. Neumann scored the first three goals of the quarter to get back to within a goal at 6-5. Brosky played a part in two of those three markers with a goal and an assist, while the hosts also got tallies from Jayana Murray and Fagan in the early run. The Dolphins retaliated with a score a 11:49 to regain a two-goal advantage at 7-5, but Neumann responded quickly with a pair of goals from Fagan midway through the frame to tie the contest at 7-7. The rest of the quarter would be back and forth between the two sides. Mount Saint Vincent took an 8-7 lead at the 4:35 mark, but then Neumann again struck twice in a 38 second span through Fagan and Reilly Fiedler to take its first lead of the game at 9-8. The Dolphins tied the matchup at nine apiece with just over 2:20 left to play in the quarter, but again the Knights had an answer, as Fagan scored her sixth goal of the day 19 seconds before halftime to give Neumann a 10-9 lead heading to the break.

The Knight attack would continue to explode early the third quarter, rattling off five unanswered goals to blow the game wide open at 15-9 with 8:30 left to play in the period. Brosky led the way with two goals in the run, while Fagan, Adams and Fiedler also scored. The two teams traded a pair of goals apiece midway through the quarter with Fagan and Adams again finding the back of the net for Neumann to make it 17-11 with three minutes remaining, but the Dolphins controlled the rest of the frame. Mount Saint Vincent closed the quarter on. 3-0 run, cutting the lead to 17-14 as the game moved to the fourth.

The Dolphin run extended into the final frame, as the visitors tallied twice in the first minute of the fourth to bring their deficit to just one at 17-16. That would be as close as Mount Saint Vincent would get though, as Fagan stopped the run with her ninth goal of the day at the 10:20 mark to stop the Dolphins' momentum. Neumann wasn't done there though as they blitzed the visitors for three more unanswered goals to extend the lead to 21-16 with 6:34 remaining. Murray and Adams scored the first two of those goals before Alison Mallon capped off the Knights' run with her first goal of the day. The Dolphins tried fighting back again with a goal with 4:33 left in the game to bring the score to 21-17, but the Neumann defense shut the door from there as the Knights clinched their first win by the same score.

Neumann (1-1) will get back to action next Wednesday, March 9th when the team heads to Rutgers-Camden. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
